Albino Giant Gourami (Osphronemus gourami / Osphronemus goramy) are fantastic fish that get along well with larger fish like cichlids and others. Size is between 2 and 3 inches.
The Giant Gourami is popular due to its enormous size, intriguing body shape, and stunning colors (red tail, albino, leucistic). These fish can be placed in “grow out” tanks of the appropriate size for their slow growth.
Excellent addition for a Monster Fish tank with Bichirs, Catfish, and a very large Arowana that is semi-aggressive. Melanin is completely absent from albino individuals, most notably in their eyes. The Albino Giant Gourami’s eyes lack melanin, allowing them to “see through” the red blood cells in the retina and iris.
I. Size
- Average Adult Size: 19 inches
- Maximum Adult Size: 20 inches
- Swimming Level: Near the top
II. You would love the fish because…
The true Albino Giant Gourami, the largest of the labyrinth fish species known as Gourami, lives up to its name by frequently reaching an adult size of more than 20 inches.
Despite their enormous size, they are typically gentle giants and extremely amiable “pet” fish that beg for food and frequently learn to identify their owners. This fish is similar to the albino form, but its gold or white form lacks the distinctive red eyes.
They are hardy and undemanding in the aquarium, but to be kept successfully, they will require a sufficiently large tank.
