Redtail Chalceus
Description
The Redtail Chalceus, also known as the Redtail Characin, is a popular fish species sought after by aquarium enthusiasts. With its vibrant colors and active nature, it can be an eye-catching addition to your aquarium. However, it's important to note that the Redtail Chalceus requires specific care and conditions to thrive. Here are a few key points about this species:
Remember, maintaining proper water quality, providing appropriate tank size, and offering a balanced diet are essential for the health and well-being of Pinktail Chalceus.
II. You would love the fish because…
The Redtail Chalceus has a slender, elongated body with a distinctive pink or red tail fin, which gives it its name. Its body is typically silver with a hint of iridescent blue or green on the scales.
These fish can grow to a considerable size, reaching around 10-12 inches (25-30 cm) in length. Therefore, they require a spacious aquarium to accommodate their active swimming habits.
Provide a large tank with plenty of swimming space. The water should be well-oxygenated and maintained at a temperature of around 72-80°F (22-27°C). They prefer slightly acidic to neutral pH levels, typically between 6.5 and 7.5.
Redtail Chalceus can be somewhat aggressive, especially during feeding time. They may chase or nip at slower-moving or smaller tankmates. Therefore, it's important to choose tankmates of similar size and temperament, avoiding slow-moving or long-finned fish.
III. Is this fish species peaceful or hostile?
A very peaceful fish.
IV. Species compatibility
Larger tetras and Rasboras, Gouramis, peaceful Barbs, Rainbowfish, Corydoras and other medium-sized catfish.
V. How to feed this species?
Pinktail Chalceus are omnivorous and primarily feed on small invertebrates, insects, and plant matter in the wild. In captivity, they should be offered a varied diet consisting of high-quality flakes, pellets, live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and small insects.
