Description

Platinum Sturgeon is a widespread species of long-whiskered pimelodid found in the Amazon River basin.

It is large and slender. During the day, this predatory species hides among the submerged roots here, and at night, it comes out to eat.

This large catfish has a delicate elongated snout that can easily be permanently damaged or turned upside down in tight spaces.

However, this can be completely avoided by starting with a large aquarium that is at least 8 feet long and 2 feet wide (or larger) to keep the fish from accidentally injuring itself while swimming quickly.

The fish will also be able to flex its long maxillary barbels, which are longer than the length of its body. Strong filtration, rapid water movement, and adequate oxygenation are required.

For the long sensory barbels to be protected, the substrate needs to be soft sand. During daylight hours, each fish should have access to at least one large shelter made of large pieces of bogwood, large slates, wide bore PVC tubing, and other materials.

Additionally, a large swimming area along the front of the aquarium should be provided for the fish to use at night. Lighting ought to be relatively dim. A blue moon light that comes on just before the main lights turn off is a favorite addition of some aquarists.

You will be able to observe your catfish throughout the evening in the dim or moonlit conditions that they prefer.

II. You would love the fish because…

Sturgeon are voracious eaters who produce a fair amount of waste and necessitate consistently excellent water conditions. Because of their inability to tolerate an elevated nitrate level, they require frequent partial water changes.

Sturgeon Catfish are moderately territorial toward their own kind and bottom-dwelling species that look like them, but they can usually be kept in groups with success, especially in large aquariums with a lot of visual barriers.

If you want this fish to be a tankmate, you need to choose them carefully because they have a big mouth and will overnight eat smaller species. Shoals of adult, large, deep-bodied cyprinids or characins would be ideal.

III. Is this fish species peaceful or hostile?

Peaceful, yet sensitive dwarf cichlid species that are suggested for experienced aquarists.
