Description

The Peacock Goby, Tateurndina ocellicauda, is a stunning and popular freshwater fish known for its vibrant colors and striking appearance.

The Peacock Goby features an elongated and slender body with a distinct dorsal fin that extends along its entire back. It has a unique and eye-catching coloration. Males display a rich iridescent blue-green hue on their bodies, resembling the brilliant colors of a peacock's tail feathers. Females, on the other hand, exhibit a more subdued coloration with shades of brown and beige. Both genders have a series of vertical stripes along their sides.

II. You would love the fish because…

Peacock Gobies are generally peaceful and make excellent additions to community aquariums. They are known for their playful and active nature, often darting around and exploring their surroundings. These fish are also known to be jumpers, so it's important to provide a well-covered aquarium to prevent any accidental escapes.

Due to their small size, Peacock Gobies can be comfortably housed in smaller aquariums, such as a 10-gallon tank. They appreciate a well-planted tank with plenty of hiding spots, rocks, and driftwood. The addition of smooth substrate and floating plants helps replicate their natural habitat and provides them with a sense of security. The water temperature should be maintained between 75-82°F (24-28°C), and the pH level should be slightly acidic to neutral.

Peacock Gobies are carnivorous and primarily feed on small invertebrates, such as insect larvae and tiny crustaceans, in the wild. In the aquarium, they readily accept a variety of high-quality commercial foods, including small pellets, frozen or live brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia. It's recommended to provide them with a varied diet to ensure their nutritional needs are met.

Peacock Gobies have been successfully bred in captivity, but it can be a bit challenging. They are egg layers, and the male typically guards the eggs until they hatch. The breeding tank should be well-planted with flat surfaces like broad leaves or small caves where the female can deposit her eggs. Providing live or frozen foods, such as brine shrimp or daphnia, can help stimulate breeding behavior.

The Peacock Goby's stunning colors, active personality, and manageable size make it an attractive choice for aquarists looking to add a touch of beauty to their freshwater aquariums.

III. Is this fish species peaceful or hostile?

Peaceful and non-aggressive.

IV. Species compatibility

Peacock Gobies are generally peaceful but can be territorial towards their own species, especially males. They can coexist with other small, peaceful fish species that share similar water requirements. It's important to avoid keeping them with aggressive or fin-nipping tank mates, as their delicate fins can be targets for aggression.

V. How to feed this species?

Goby like to eat anything that is drifting near. So you can't take care of them with food that floats on the outer layer of the water, like flakes. They like eating live food as well as frozen food.
