Description

Guppy Grass, scientifically known as Najas guadalupensis, is a hardy, fast-growing aquatic plant commonly used in freshwater aquariums. It’s popular for its ability to provide shelter and hiding spots, especially for small fish and fry, such as guppies (hence the name!).

Thin, feathery green leaves that grow densely and can float or root in the substrate.

Very fast; it can quickly cover the surface or create thick underwater foliage.

Moderate, but can adapt to low-light conditions.

Not required, though it can benefit from it.

Benefits in an Aquarium

  • Shelter: Provides cover for small fish, fry, and shrimp, giving them a safe space to hide.
  • Water Quality: Absorbs excess nutrients, helping to reduce algae growth and maintain water quality.
  • Oxygenation: Contributes to oxygen levels in the tank through photosynthesis.

Care Tips

  • Pruning: Regular trimming is needed to prevent it from overtaking the tank.
  • Propagation: Easily propagated by cutting stems and replanting them.
  • Temperature: Thrives in a wide range of temperatures, ideally around 18-28°C (64-82°F).

This plant is great for beginners and makes an excellent addition to most community tanks. It’s also a favorite among aquarists for breeding and fry rearing.
