Description

CRS shrimp (Crystal Red Shrimp) are a super popular freshwater shrimp species in the aquarium hobby, especially known for their striking red and white patterns. They're a type of Caridina shrimp and are quite sought after by aquascapers and shrimp enthusiasts.

  • Scientific Name: Caridina cantonensis var. Crystal Red
  • Size: Around 2.5 - 3 cm (1 inch)
  • Lifespan: 1.5 to 2 years (sometimes a bit longer with perfect care)
  • Behavior: Peaceful, best kept in species-only tanks or with very calm fish.
  • Origin: They are a selectively bred variety from the Bee Shrimp, originally from China.

Tank Size: Minimum 10 gallons (better stability)

High-quality shrimp food, blanched veggies (like zucchini, spinach), biofilm, and sometimes supplements like bee pollen.

Be careful not to overfeed to avoid water quality issues.

Stability is key! CRS are sensitive to sudden changes.

Regular, small water changes with remineralized RO (reverse osmosis) water work best.

Avoid copper-based medications—deadly for shrimp.

Provide lots of hiding spots with mosses, driftwood, and shrimp cave

Best Tank Mates for CRS:

  1. Other Shrimp

    • Caridina species (like Crystal Black Shrimp, Taiwan Bee Shrimp)
    • Neocaridina (like Cherry Shrimp) – but be cautious, as crossbreeding isn’t possible, but different water parameter preferences can be an issue.
  2. Snails

    • Nerite Snails (great algae cleaners)
    • Malaysian Trumpet Snails
    • Rabbit Snails
    • Mystery Snails (if parameters align)
  3. Tiny, Peaceful Fish (with caution)

    • Ember Tetras
    • Endler’s Livebearers (though babies might still be at risk)
    • Chili Rasboras
    • Galaxy Rasboras (Celestial Pearl Danios)
    • Pygmy Corydoras (gentle bottom dwellers)
