How to Use Chaetomorpha Algae in Your Tank
Placement
Keep Chaetomorpha in a refugium or sump rather than the main display tank.
Use a section with moderate water flow to keep it gently tumbling — this prevents detritus buildup and promotes healthy growth.
Lighting
Provide strong, consistent light (usually 12–16 hours daily) using an LED refugium light or grow light.
Spectrum: Warm white (around 3,000–6,500K) works well for growth.
Water Conditions
Works best in marine or reef tanks with stable salinity (1.023–1.026 SG).
Grows faster when nitrate and phosphate levels are present in moderate amounts.
Maintenance
Harvest excess Chaetomorpha regularly — this physically removes absorbed nutrients from the system.
Shake it out in saltwater during harvest to release trapped pods back into the refugium.
Extra Tip
