The deep black color and rhomboid markings that give it the appearance of a diamond give the black diamond neon tetra its name.
The black diamond neon tetra is a schooling fish that thrives in groups of at least six and, ideally, more than ten. It is a member of the family Characidae and a member of a group called characins. Small, freshwater characins are native to South America.
They look very much like their relatives, the black mollies (Poecilia sphenops).
