The exotic freshwater pangasius catfish, Pangasianodon hypophthalmus, was introduced to India in the middle of the 1990s.

Due to its typically attractive juvenile appearance, which is in demand in the ornamental fish trade, it is also known as the iridescent shark.

It is a highly migratory benthopelagic riverine fish that travels long distances between its spawning and feeding habitats upstream and downstream.

It eats everything; Algae, macro-vegetation, zooplankton, and insects are eaten by the early stages, while fruits, crustaceans, and fish are eaten by the adult.

It is a facultative air breathing fish that can tolerate DO levels as low as 0.1 ppm for brief periods of time.

It is ranked third in freshwater aquaculture production and is considered a potential species for intensive aquaculture due to its rapid growth rate, hardiness, good disease resistance, and adaptability to high stocking densities.

Around the world, the pure white meat of the fish, which is mostly sold as fillets, is a significant commodity with added value.

II. You would love the fish because…

Even though pangasius fish are typically found in freshwater, they can live in saltwater with concentrations of 0.7% to 1% and alum water with a PH greater than 5, which can be tolerated at temperatures around 30°C.

Pangasius has a slim body, a dark gray back, a silver stomach, a largemouth, and a long double beard. It has more red blood cells than other fish, a second respiratory organ, and can breathe through bubbles and skin. This indicates that it is prepared to withstand environments with low dissolved oxygen levels.

It can live in the wild for up to 20 years due to its rapid growth rate. During breeding, it grows to about 10 to 12 centimeters in length and weighs 14 to 15 grams after about two months.

In farming ponds, it can weigh up to 25 kg by age 10, and individuals weighing between 800 and 1,100 grams after six to eight months (not counting the breeding stage) are best for harvesting.

III. Is this fish species peaceful or hostile?

Peaceful

IV. Species compatibility

Gets alone well with tank mates of the same size

V. How to feed this species?

Earthen ponds ranging in size from 0.1 to 0.4 ha are used to stock adult fish at a stocking density of 5 to 10 t/ha. The fish receive either trash fish or meat at a rate of 5% of bodyweight or a floating pelleted feed containing 35% protein twice daily.
