Zebra nerite snails are one of the most stunning freshwater snails available to aquarists because of their dramatic black stripes.
The Zebra nerite, in addition to being very decorative, feeds almost entirely on algae, to the point where algae wafers may have to be fed to supplement the diminishing food supply.
Even the hard green algae that are so difficult to remove is on the menu, but despite their appetite for the green stuff, these snails will not eat plants, making them an ideal addition to the planted aquarium.
Although N.Natalensis is an aquatic snail, it has been observed climbing up and above the water level, hence a tightly fitting cover glass or lid is advised to keep them from escaping. Most aquarium keepers regard snails as a pest that might grow uncontrollably; however, you will be relieved to discover that, while they may lay eggs, they do not reproduce. Due to a larval stage that demands brackish conditions, zebra nerites are extremely difficult to spawn in the aquarium. It is recommended that they be kept in alkaline water (pH 7+) to avoid any shell growth concerns.
II. You would love the fish because…
Zebra Nerite Snails are the most common freshwater Nerite snail species in the aquarium hobby. They are distinguished by striking black and gold stripes extending from a point at the tail of their shell. Zebra Nerite Snails can grow to be 1″ long, however, they are frequently bought and sold considerably smaller. They are quite popular and are available at most LFS.
Zebra Nerite Snails, like other Nerite snail species, are nearly impossible to breed in freshwater. This makes them preferable to other snail species that can overpopulate aquariums.
Zebra Nerite Snails are classified as ‘tidal snails.’ The term derives from the snail’s capacity to live free of water for extended periods. Unfortunately, Tracked Nerite Snails frequently escape from aquariums. They are pretty easy to locate and can be picked up and returned to the aquarium. Tracked Nerite Snails should be monitored daily.
III. Is this fish species peaceful or hostile?
Nerite snails are peaceful herbivores who do not bother their tankmates.
IV. Species compatibility
Safe to keep with any fish, shrimp, live plants, or other snails.
V. How to feed this species?
Nerite snails primarily consume algae in your tank. They’re quite efficient at it, which is why they’re so popular in the aquarium industry. They can sometimes be so good that they hoover the entire tank clean and there aren’t enough algae left.
