Vampire Crab

The Vampire Crab, also known as Geosesarma dennerle, is a small species of land crab native to the island of Java in Indonesia.

It is named after its striking coloration, which includes deep red or purple hues, giving it a somewhat “vampiric” appearance.

Vampire Crabs are relatively small, with males typically growing up to 2 inches (5 cm) in carapace width, while females are slightly smaller.

The most intriguing thing about Vampire Crabs is, beyond a shadow of a doubt, their appearance! Similar to that of other small crabs, their profile is similar. They have ten legs all together! Their two big pinchers are included in this.

The majority of crabs have powerful claws that can cause a lot of damage, but these animals don’t. Their claws are quite narrow and quite small. As a result, you won’t have to worry about pinching them when handling them. However, they can still cause harm to other small animals.

The body is usually a little darker. It could be black or brownish-purple. Their carapace is frequently dotted with creamy white spots, giving them a stunning appearance.

In the wild, Vampire Crabs are omnivorous, feeding on a variety of organic matter such as fallen leaves, fruits, insects, and small invertebrates. In captivity, they can be fed a diet of high-quality crab or shrimp pellets, along with occasional treats like small insects or plant matter.

Vampire Crabs can be challenging due to their specific environmental requirements. The female carries the fertilized eggs on her abdomen until they hatch into miniature versions of the adults. The young crabs undergo several molts before reaching adulthood.

Vampire Crabs are kept as pets in the aquarium hobby. They require a well-maintained tank with a land-water ratio of around 70:30. The enclosure should have plenty of hiding spots, such as caves, rocks, and driftwood. The temperature should be maintained between 75-82°F (24-28°C), with a humidity level of around 70-80%.
