The Taiwan Reef Cichlid, also known as Protomelas sp. ‘Taiwan Reef’, is a stunning freshwater fish native to Lake Malawi in East Africa. It’s well-known among cichlid enthusiasts for its vibrant and striking coloration, making it a popular choice for aquarium hobbyists. Despite its name, this cichlid is not from Taiwan, but the name is derived from the specific reef in Lake Malawi where it is commonly found.
Male Taiwan Reef Cichlids are famous for their vivid coloration, featuring a mix of electric blue, yellow, and red. The face and body are usually blue, with yellow or orange flanks and red accents on the dorsal fin. Females are less colorful, generally sporting a more subdued silver or gray coloration.
Males can grow up to 6-7 inches (15-18 cm), while females are usually slightly smaller, around 4-5 inches (10-12 cm).
Taiwan Reef Cichlids are considered semi-aggressive, especially during breeding periods. They can be kept with other cichlids of similar temperament but should be provided with enough space to establish their territories.
Omnivorous, they thrive on a varied diet, including high-quality cichlid pellets, flakes, and live or frozen foods like brine shrimp and mysis shrimp. Avoid overfeeding protein-rich foods, as it can lead to health issues.
