The Redtail Chalceus has a slender, elongated body with a distinctive pink or red tail fin, which gives it its name. Its body is typically silver with a hint of iridescent blue or green on the scales.
These fish can grow to a considerable size, reaching around 10-12 inches (25-30 cm) in length. Therefore, they require a spacious aquarium to accommodate their active swimming habits.
Provide a large tank with plenty of swimming space. The water should be well-oxygenated and maintained at a temperature of around 72-80°F (22-27°C). They prefer slightly acidic to neutral pH levels, typically between 6.5 and 7.5.
