Description

The Red Tail Shovelnose Catfish (Pseudoplatystoma sp.) can make for an interesting and impressive pet, but it requires careful consideration and preparation due to its size and care needs.

These fish can grow up to 3 feet (90 cm) or more, so a very large tank is required. A minimum of 300 gallons is recommended, though larger is better.

The tank should have plenty of swimming space, as these fish are active swimmers. Provide hiding spots with driftwood or large rocks, but make sure there's enough open space for them to move around.

Keep the water temperature between 75-82°F (24-28°C).

Maintain a pH level of 6.0 to 7.5.

A powerful filtration system is essential, as these fish produce a lot of waste. Regular water changes are also necessary to maintain water quality.

Red Tail Shovelnose Catfish are carnivorous and require a diet of meaty foods. In captivity, they can be fed fish, shrimp, and other protein-rich foods. Be cautious of overfeeding, as they can easily become overweight.

Feed them a few times a week, but avoid daily feeding to prevent obesity.

While they are generally not aggressive towards similar-sized fish, they are predatory and will eat smaller tank mates. It's best to house them with other large, robust fish.

These catfish are nocturnal, so they are most active at night. You may notice them being more reclusive during the day.

With proper care, Red Tail Shovelnose Catfish can live for 10-15 years or more.

Suitable tank mates include other large, peaceful fish like Arowanas, Peacock Bass, and large Plecos. Avoid housing them with small or slow-moving fish.
