Red Hi Fin Sucker: More than 150 species of plecos are catfish with plates and spines instead of scales covering their bodies and mouths in the shape of suckers. When threatened by a predator, they can raise and lower their plates and spines.

In Latin, the word plecostomus means “folded mouth.” These well-known algae eaters originated in the rivers of the South American Amazon jungle. Many of them live in fast-moving rivers and streams, where they attach themselves to rocks and wood with their suckermouths to keep them from being washed away by the current.

It is possible for some species of pleco to breathe air and extract oxygen from it within their intestines thanks to adaptations in their digestive systems. Because they are scavengers who will eat and clean almost anything, plecos are frequently referred to as “janitor fish.” They are suggested for new aquarists.
