Microsorum pteropus ‘Trident’, commonly known as Java Fern ‘Trident’, is a popular aquatic plant in the aquarium hobby. It is a cultivar of the Java Fern species, known for its unique appearance and easy care, making it ideal for beginners and experienced aquarists alike.

The ‘Trident’ variety has narrow, forked, and wavy leaves, resembling the prongs of a trident.

Its vibrant green color adds a natural and lush look to aquariums.

Can grow up to 20–30 cm (8–12 inches) in height.

Its leaves spread horizontally, giving a dense, bushy appearance.

Moderate growth rate, depending on the tank conditions.

Typically used as a mid-ground or background plant.

Care Requirements

Lighting:

Thrives in low to medium light conditions.

High light can lead to algae growth if not balanced with CO₂ or nutrients.

Water Parameters:

Temperature: 20–28°C (68–82°F)

pH: 6.0–7.5.

Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water.

Does not require substrate planting as its rhizome must remain exposed.

Planting the rhizome can cause it to rot.

Does well without CO₂ injection but benefits from liquid fertilizers, especially for potassium.

Maintenance:

Trim dead or yellowing leaves regularly to encourage new growth.

Propagation is simple; divide the rhizome and reattach it to a surface.
