Geophegus Taeniopareius

Geophegus Taeniopareius: Geophagus: from the Greek words phagos, which means “to eat,” and geo, which means “earth.”

The tributary drainages of the Rios Caura, Cataniapo, Atacavi, Ocamo, Matacuni, Zoapore, and Nichare have all been found to contain this species, which is native to the Venezuelan portion of the upper Rio Orinoco system.

“Ro Orinoco, Raudales d’Ature, eastern shore, 5°36’N, 67°37’W, Territorio Federal Amazonas, Venezuela” is the type location.

The Ro Orinoco is located in the tropical zone of Venezuela. This zone has warm temperatures all year round and well-defined weather patterns with distinct wet and dry seasons, with the dry season lasting from May to November.

River depth and flow rate can vary greatly during the rainy season, even daily, and turbidity also rises.

This species was observed in a pool of the Orinoco flood zone near the city of Puerto Ayacucho in the Amazonas state of Venezuela. The pool contained clear, still water and was surrounded by marginal vegetation.

The majority of Earth Eaters live in South America’s Amazon River basin.

Additionally, some traces of these species have been discovered in the Bolivian Amazon and Eastern French Guiana.

The Earth Eater fish has eyes that are prominently positioned high on its upper head, which is somewhat conical in shape.

The flank has prominent marks and distinct stripes covering the entire body.

This species of fish can reach a length of 18.5 cm (17.3 inches) at maturity.

Satanoperca Jurupari is another well-known name for the earth-eating species. The Demon Earth Eater is their common moniker.

Their body is strikingly colored and appealing to the eye.

It is essential to maintain the pH level of the water; therefore, you should ensure that this species is at ease in water with a pH between 6 and 8.

In their diet, these earth eaters are omnivores. Naturally, feeding these fish would not be difficult.

Daphnia, brine shrimp, numerous herbivore and carnivore flakes, small pellets, blood worms, and black larvae are all part of the diet. In their diet, these are abundant protein and vitamin sources.

The earth eater typically ascends to the water column when the tank provides food. Otherwise, they flow peacefully in the water on their own.

They sift small foods like insect larvae out of the fine sand substrate in their mouth.

The gill opening and the mouth are the two methods by which the remaining food is extracted.

The earth eaters eat simple foods made of flake and pellet. They are accustomed to following the diet in smaller, more frequent meals. As a result, the number of people who eat earth foods has exploded.

The majority of other Geophagus spp. are not nearly as aggressive as G. taeniopareius. However, in larger aquariums, multiple specimens can still be kept together.

The bare minimum should be a group of 5-8 people, as weaker members can be the target of excessive hostility in smaller groups.

Although we are aware of several instances in which this species has been maintained for an extended period of time alongside members of the G. surinamensis group (see “Notes”), other cichlids should generally be avoided as tankmates.

Schools of smaller characids can be added without fear of predation because smaller fish are typically ignored.

Geophagus spp. are kept by some aquarists. alongside Potamotrygon freshwater stingrays, which have been successful in many cases but have also caused them to vanish at night (!).
