Geophegus Proximus: This species is widely distributed and has been documented throughout a significant portion of Peru and Brazil’s Rio Amazonas (Amazon River) system.

The rio Trombetas near Santarém, as well as the lower reaches of most tributary systems within that range, have since been recorded along the Solimes-Amazon mainstream. It was first described from “Ro Ucayali, Mission Saraycu, Peru.”

II. You would love the fish because…

Mostly found in the lower reaches of rivers, but it has also been collected from floodplain lakes in the Varzea region and permanent black water lakes like Lago Aman near Tefé, Brazil.

It is said to prefer clear, black water over turbid, “white” water, and it typically lives in marginal zones with substrates of sand, fine gravel, and mud that gently slope around shores or islands.

Other features of the habitat may include scattered rocks and submerged tree roots and branches, depending on the location.
