Five-banded Barb – Desmopuntius pentazona also known as the banded barb, the five-banded barb, and other names, is an excellent and well-liked fish for aquariums.

It is a member of the order Cypriniformes of the family Cyprinidae and the class Actinopyterygii. It comes from Southeast Asia. It prefers to live in slow-moving water bodies like floodplains, ditches, and small rivers.

The Five Banded Barb has two barbels and a long body with a high back. This fish has large eyes for a fish with such a small body.

The color of the back ranges from olive brown to dark orange, while the color of the flanks is orange-brown. White on the belly and throat. The other fins may have a hint of orange, while the anal and ventral fins are red. Red-orange coloration covers the gills.

The Five Banded Barb has five transverse bands, as its common name suggests. The first band goes all the way through the eye, and the final band is close to the caudal peduncle.

You must maintain good water quality in the aquarium if you want your fish to display vivid colors.

Five-banded barbs live in harmony with their community.

They are content to swim socially and have no trouble interacting with their rummy-nosed tetra friends.

They are superficially similar to tiger barbs (Puntigrus tetrazona), but unlike tiger barbs, which have five black bands instead of four, pentazonas are completely placid. In contrast, tiger barbs are known for being a bit of a fighty/nippy fish.

The bodies of the barbs with five bands are a subtle reddish-orange color. It’s tempting to speculate that the more reddish five-banded barbs are also the males, but with the five-banded barbs, this difference is much more subtle, not that it makes much difference anyway in this (non-breeding) tank.

At first, the five-banded barbs were more reserved than the rummy-nosed tetras, who lived in the tank’s upper reaches and the barbs in the middle. As a result, when the fish food (flakes) were sprinkled on the surface during feeding time, the barbs took what was left, while the tetras had their first shot at the food.

It didn’t take long for the barbs to realize that wasn’t how they wanted to play things, so they braved up and now feed the tetras when the barbs are right there in the mix and going for it.

V. How to feed this species?
