The Denison Barb, also known as the Red Line Torpedo Barb or Denison’s Flying Fox, is a striking and popular aquarium fish. Native to the rivers of southern India, particularly the Western Ghats, it’s named after a famous British aquarium fish exporter, Denison. This fish is known for its distinctive appearance, characterized by a red stripe running horizontally along its silver body, hence the “Red Line” nickname.
Denison Barbs are known for their active and peaceful nature, making them great additions to community tanks. They do best in spacious tanks with plenty of swimming space and hiding spots. These fish are also schooling species, so it’s recommended to keep them in groups of at least six to reduce stress and encourage natural behaviors.
Proper water parameters, including pH and temperature, are essential for the health of Denison Barbs. They prefer slightly acidic to neutral water with temperatures ranging from 72°F to 79°F (22°C to 26°C). A well-balanced diet consisting of high-quality flake or pellet food supplemented with occasional treats like bloodworms or brine shrimp will keep them healthy and vibrant.
