Blue Panda Apistogramma / Apistogramma panduro is a beautiful nanofish. The males of this species of dwarf cichlid are metallic sky blue and have bright yellow tips on their ventral fins.
They also have a striking orange band around their tail fin that sometimes has a more delicate red edge on the inside. The females, like the majority of apistogramma, are a brilliant yellow, especially when they are in a breeding mood.
However, they stand out from the majority of other apistogramma by having a very dense black blotch or bar on their flanks. These fish, which are very similar to Apistogramma nijsseni and are named after the Peruvian explorer Jesus Victoriano Panduro Pinedo, were discovered for the first time in the hobby in May of 1996, probably by accident.
They also have a lot of personality.
II. You would love the fish because…
A rare but extremely colorful species of Apistogramma dwarf cichlid, the Blue Panda Dwarf Cichlid (Apistogramma panduro/pandurini) Males who reach maturity acquire a distinctive sky blue sheen on their entire body, yellow coloring on some of their fins, and a bright red margin at the tail’s end.
While mature females typically have black and bright yellow coloring, they may still have bright red coloring at the tail’s tip. Like most dwarf cichlids, mature males are more vividly colored than females.
As long as there aren’t too many of their kind in the tank, these little blue darts are a great addition to any community tank.
They generally live in peace. Keeping a pair with a school of tetras or some rasboras is a great option because this species’ males and females tend to form monogamous pairs that stay together for multiple spawns.
As long as your aquarium is large enough to allow them to hide, a single pair of these cichlids might just surprise you with a small group of babies at some point! If you fill the tank with a lot of leaf litter and branchwork for the babies to hide in, apistogrammas typically make excellent parents.
