The peacock eel (Macrognathus siamensis) is a species of freshwater spiny eel native to Southeast Asia. It is a popular choice among aquarium enthusiasts due to its unique appearance and peaceful temperament.
Reaches up to 12 inches (30 cm) in captivity but can grow slightly larger in the wild.
Long, slender, and eel-like, with a dorsal fin running along most of its back.
Found in slow-moving or still waters such as rivers, ponds, and swamps in countries like Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, and Cambodia.
Prefers sandy or muddy substrates where it can burrow for safety.
- Nocturnal: Most active at night and tends to hide during the day.
- Peaceful: Non-aggressive and can be housed with similarly peaceful fish, but may eat smaller tank mates.
- Burrowing: Frequently burrows into the substrate to feel secure.
