Skunk Grouper
Description
The Skunk Grouper (Mycteroperca rubra), also known as the Mottled Grouper, is a lesser-known marine species sometimes kept in large predator tanks.
Unique Appearance
It has a mottled brown to reddish color with a pale “skunk-like” stripe along its body, giving it a rugged, wild look that sets it apart from ornamental fish.
Interesting Behavior
Like most groupers, it’s a slow-moving, stealthy predator—watching it stalk food can be fascinating.
Hardy and Long-Lived
Known to adapt well to captivity if given enough space, clean water, and a proper diet.
Centerpiece Predator
Ideal for species-only or predator marine tanks, where it can be the main attraction.
Major Considerations
Size
Grows up to 60 cm (2 feet) or more. Needs a very large aquarium—at least 250–300 gallons.
Aggression & Diet
Will eat smaller tank mates. Needs a steady diet of meaty foods like fish, shrimp, and squid.
Not Reef-Safe
Will disturb or consume smaller fish, crustaceans, and invertebrates—not suitable for coral reef setups.
Expensive Setup
Requires strong filtration, consistent water quality, and a secure tank environment.
