Description

Redtail Catfish : The redtail catfish is a massive freshwater fish that should only be kept by aquarists with years of experience.

Despite this, there are a lot of people who think that keeping these fish in captivity would be much easier.

The scientific name for the redtail catfish is phractocephalus hemioliopterus) is native to the northernmost countries of South America. Colombia, Brazil, Peru, Venezuela, Ecuador, Guyana, and Bolivia are the most common locations.

It hunts for anything edible in streams, lakes, and freshwater river basins (primarily the Amazon and Orinoco). These fish will eat anything!

II. You would love the fish because…

The redtail catfish has a look that is very typical of "catfish." It has large barbels, or long whiskers, that are hard to miss. Regardless of whether the fish is swimming quickly or not, they tend to stick out straight.

Dark grey is the primary color of their body, with a few tiny dots extending across this area.

The underside of a redtail catfish's head, which extends roughly back to where their pectoral fins begin, is white. This white area typically extends all the way to the base of their caudal fins from above their pectoral fins.

Both their caudal fins and the top third of their dorsal fins are red. They got their rather straightforward name from this.

The body of a redtail catfish is quite thick and tapers slightly toward the tail. Their underbelly is quite flat, especially under their head, like that of many freshwater catfish.

A redtail catfish kept in captivity typically measures between 3 and 4 feet in length. This can reach closer to 5 feet in the wild.

If you want to keep one in your home aquarium, it's important to know how big this is and what that means. This indicates that in order to provide them with adequate comfort, the minimum tank size will be enormous.

Redtail Catfish Care There are a few things you can't compromise on if you want to try redtail catfish care. The stakes are always much higher when dealing with such large and aggressive fish, and mistakes are also punished more severely.

III. Is this fish species peaceful or hostile?

A rather peaceful fish.

IV. Species compatibility

V. How to feed this species?

It should come as no surprise that feeding a redtail catfish is as simple as it gets. As long as it contains some meat, these catfish will eat anything that enters the water! The majority of aquarists feed their fish from a prepared pellet food formula, which is an excellent starting point.
