Description

Mexican Dwarf Crayfish:

The southern United States and Mexico are home to dwarf crayfish. Although they can be found in ponds and lakes, they mostly live in streams and small rivers. They are typically found in the shallows and prefer slow-moving waters.

The largest species of dwarf crayfish will only reach a maximum length of about 2 inches (5 cm) in a home aquarium, where they remain relatively small.

They typically live two to three years in captivity, but there have been cases where they have lived longer.

Mexican dwarf crayfish are hardy, tolerant, and comparatively simple to breed. They won't severely restrict your options like their larger cousins do.

You would love the fish because…

The Lake Pátzcuaro in Michoacán, a volcanic crater lake southwest of Mexico's largest city of Morelia, is the source of dwarf Mexican crawfish.

The majority of this crayfish's wild individuals are tan, brown, or rust colored. However, in addition to their typical, noticeably dull, wild type coloration, dwarf Mexican crawfish are also available in brightly colored morphs.

The dwarf species' orange color variant was bred in the Netherlands in the 1990s by Juan Carlos Merino.

Hobbyist find this color morph, also known as "CPO - Cambarellus patzcuarensis var orange," to be very attractive and well-liked. Actually, it completely dominated this species' pet market. Once more, the crayfish being bred in captivity is the cause of this mutation.
