Description

The Malabar Danio (Devario malabaricus) is a species of freshwater fish that belongs to the Danio family, Cyprinidae.

The Malabar Danio typically has a silvery body with a slight golden or yellowish hue. Along the sides of its body, you may notice a series of dark vertical stripes or bars that run from the head to the tail. These stripes may appear more prominent in some individuals compared to others.

II. You would love the fish because…

Malabar Danios are relatively small fish, with adult individuals reaching lengths of around 2 to 3 inches (5 to 8 centimeters). They have a streamlined and elongated body shape, common among Danio species.

The fins of the Malabar Danio are generally translucent or pale, complementing the overall coloration of the fish. The dorsal fin, located on the back, may have a slight yellowish or orange tint. The caudal (tail) fin is typically forked, and the other fins, such as the anal and pelvic fins, are relatively small.

Malabar Danios are active and lively fish. They are known for their playful nature and can often be seen swimming and exploring all areas of the aquarium. They are typically peaceful and can be kept in community aquariums with other small, non-aggressive fish species.

Malabar Danios are native to freshwater habitats in southern India, particularly in the Malabar region, which gives them their common name. They inhabit slow-moving or stagnant waters, such as streams, rivers, ponds, and flooded fields.

Malabar Danios prefer a well-maintained aquarium with plenty of swimming space and hiding spots. They appreciate the presence of live plants and driftwood. They are generally hardy and adaptable fish, tolerating a range of water parameters. It is best to maintain the water temperature between 72-79°F (22-26°C).
