Description

The Green Chromide, also known as the Pearl Spot (Etroplus suratensis), is a popular fish species native to South Asia.

The Green Chromide has an oval, laterally compressed body with a greenish-grey coloration and distinctive pearly spots scattered across its body, which give it the "pearl spot" name.

They can grow up to 40 cm (16 inches) in length, although they are typically smaller in home aquariums.

Native to the brackish and freshwater habitats of India and Sri Lanka, particularly in the backwaters, lagoons, and estuaries of Kerala.

Prefers environments with a mix of fresh and brackish water, often found in slow-moving rivers, lakes, and ponds with abundant vegetation.

Omnivorous, feeding on a variety of foods including algae, plant matter, small invertebrates, and detritus. In an aquarium, they can be fed a diet of vegetables, pellets, flakes, and occasional live or frozen foods.

Generally peaceful, but can be territorial during breeding. They are best kept in groups to encourage natural behavior and social interactions.

A large tank with plenty of hiding spots, such as rocks, driftwood, and plants, is ideal. They prefer slightly brackish water (adding a small amount of marine salt can help) with a pH of 7.0-8.5 and a temperature range of 24-30°C (75-86°F).

Suitable tank mates include other large, peaceful fish that can tolerate similar water conditions. Avoid keeping them with very small or highly aggressive fish.
