Description

Geophagus Abalios: Geophagus: from the Greek words phagos, which means "to eat," and geo, which means "earth." abalios: from the Greek balios, which means "spotted," and a, which means "not, without."

The species is known to have a wider distribution throughout the Venezuelan Llanos, including the roos Apure, Cinaruco, Capanaparo, Aguaro, and Guariquito, though its type locality is listed as "Laguna Larga, 6.5339°N, 67.4150°W, Rio Cinaruco, Apure, Venezuela."
It is also found in the ro Caura on the Guyana Shield, as well as the Ventauri and Mavaca drainages in the middle and upper Orinoco. Some white water, rather than turbulence, habitats are also known to have it.
Its range appears to be restricted to the north by the Las Majaguas dam on the Ro Cojedes, an Apure tributary where a likely introduced population lives in the dam's reservoir.
It can be found as far south as the Rio Casiquiare, near the Rio Negro's headwaters in Brazil.

II. You would love the fish because…

Since many Geophagus species are very similar and can be found in many different parts of South America, collectors frequently mislabel them.

We believe that this strain is the Geophagus abalios after conducting additional research and speaking with an expert in the field. If you have any questions about these fish, send us an email and we can provide you with additional information.

The Llanos is a tremendous, exceptionally biodiverse arrangement of tropical savannah prairies, occasionally overwhelmed fields and woodlands covering a region estimating very nearly 600,000 square kilometers in Venezuela and Colombia.
It drains from many of the tributaries of the Rio Orinoco, which is to its north and west.
With distinct wet and dry seasons and high temperatures throughout the year, there are clearly defined annual weather patterns.
G. abalios is most common in lowland floodplain rivers, where it has been known to enter floodplains during the rainy season. Many rivers are breaking their banks at this time, leaving behind a maze of lagoons and channels that connect each other.
At other times of the year, it mostly lives in black waters with a low pH, little conductivity, and little suspended sediment. It prefers still lagoons to river channels.

III. Is this fish species peaceful or hostile?

A very peaceful cichlid.

IV. Species compatibility

  • Severum Cichlids
  • Electric Blue Acara
  • Larger Tetras
  • Festivum Cichlid
  • Keyhole Cichlid.

V. How to feed this species?

Simple to feed and enjoy a varied diet. Sinking pelletized omnivore food is a good all-around option because they are bottom sifters. It's a good idea to add protein foods like daphnia, brine shrimp, chopped shrimp, or bloodworms.
