Endlicheri Bichir / Endlicheri Senegal
Description
Bring a prehistoric touch to your aquarium with the Endlicheri Bichir (Polypterus endlicheri). Also known as the Saddled Bichir, this fascinating freshwater fish has an elongated, snake-like body, bony-looking scales and a series of small dorsal finlets that give it a truly ancient appearance.
Endlicheri Bichirs are bottom-dwelling fish that spend much of their time exploring the aquarium floor. They are generally hardy when provided with stable water conditions and plenty of space. Their ability to breathe atmospheric air means they frequently rise to the surface, so the aquarium must have a secure-fitting lid.
This species is best suited to experienced aquarists with a spacious aquarium. As they grow large and are predatory by nature, tank mates should be chosen carefully.
