Description

Devil Faunus snail: The Faunus ater, or Black Devil Snail, is a stunning snail in the aquarium industry.

They are fairly tough snails that can survive in a variety of saltwater and freshwater environments.
The incredibly robust Black Devil Spike Snail is also a very proficient algae eater! These enigmatic and dark snails, often known as lava snails or Faunus ater, are underappreciated by aquarium hobbyists.
They have gorgeous, glossy shells that range in color from chocolate brown to the darkest black, and they get quite big.
They are most common in Thailand's brackish waters, but they can also be found elsewhere in Asia. They can survive in freshwater, but only brackish water will allow them to breed.

II. You would love the fish because…

These snails are related to the well-known Malaysian Trumpet Snails, but their size and shape are more like those of the Giant Sulawesi Snails.

They have lengthy, whorled shells, but one of them tapers off into a pointier, more spike-like protrusion.

A Black Devil Snail's body is coloured gray/black or chestnut brown, and its shell can be any shade between a beautiful, glossy black and a rich chocolate brown.

The huge size and thin conical form of the shells make them distinctive. The periostracum (special layer) shields the shell from its habitat's acidic conditions.
The huge buccal mass, powerful radula, and broad, muscular nose suggest that this species can graze on rough terrain.
The foot is lighter than the body and is gray-black in hue with a faint dot pattern.
In the aquarium, Black Devil Snails can migrate more quickly because they are more resilient and active than Giant Sulawesi Snails.
They are renowned for being good substrate cleansers and for being able to survive in colder climates. Keep any live plants you have in your aquarium out of the reach of these snails; they have been known to munch on live plants. These gentle aquarium dwellers are suitable to keep with shrimp and other snails.

III. Is this fish species peaceful or hostile?

Very peaceful creatures.

IV. Species compatibility

Cory catfish, Freshwater clams, Cherry barbs, Danios, Guppies, Tetras, and Certain species of shrimp (like bamboo shrimps and ghost shrimps)

V. How to feed this species?

Snails are carnivorous and exclusively consume protein-based foods. Their preferred diet is other snails that are smaller than them.

They're also not choosy but will assault any snail they come across. Trumpet Snails, Rabbit Snails, Ivory Snails, and Ramshorn Snails are commonly fed to them by their owners. Assassin Snails will eat the eggs of other snail species as well.

If neither of these is available, shrimp fried and bloodworms will suffice. Your snail may be feasting on brine shrimp or flakes that have fallen to the bottom of the aquarium.
