Bolivian Ram
Description
Bolivian Ram, also known as the Bolivian Butterfly or Bolivian Blue Ram, is a popular freshwater fish species among aquarium enthusiasts. It is scientifically known as Mikrogeophagus altispinosus and is native to the rivers and tributaries of Bolivia and Brazil.
Adult Bolivian Rams usually reach a size of around 3 to 4 inches (7.5 to 10 cm) in length. Males tend to grow slightly larger than females.
Bolivian Rams are beautiful and interesting fish to keep in a freshwater aquarium. Their striking colors, peaceful nature, and ease of care make them a popular choice for both beginner and experienced fish keepers.
I. Size
- Average Adult Size: 2.5 inches (5-6 cm)
- Maximum Adult Size: 7 cm (2.7 in)
- Swimming Level: A few centimeters above the bottom.
II. You would love the fish because…
The Bolivian Ram has a compact, oval-shaped body with vibrant colors. The base coloration of the body is a golden-yellow to light brown, while the head and chest region have a blue-green sheen. It features several vertical black bars on its sides, which become less prominent as the fish matures.
These fish are generally peaceful and can be kept in community aquariums. However, it's important to provide them with suitable tank mates, as they can be somewhat territorial when breeding. They prefer a well-decorated tank with plenty of hiding spots created using rocks, caves, and plants.
Bolivian Rams prefer a slightly acidic to neutral pH range of around 6.0 to 7.5. The temperature should be maintained between 75 to 82°F (24 to 28°C). Providing a well-filtered tank with regular water changes is crucial to maintain good water quality.
Breeding Bolivian Rams can be relatively easy compared to some other cichlid species. They are substrate spawners, meaning they lay their eggs on a flat surface. It's beneficial to provide them with flat rocks or ceramic spawning sites. The parents guard the eggs and fry, and their parenting behavior is fascinating to observe.
